Inspiration

“Babe, look at this little island, I wonder how we can get there”

The process for picking our next travel destination typically begins on the plane ride home from our previous travel destination. The picture is always the same: Jeron with Google Earth open on his phone, zooming in and out looking for hidden gems. “Babe, look at this little island, I wonder how we can get there” or just a subtle, but powerful, “wow.” That is when I know he is on to something and that is precisely how we found one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean: Corn Islands, Nicaragua.

Why we picked It

We pride ourselves on always trying to travel to different, lesser-known locations. This is what drew us to the Corn Islands, Little Corn Island specifically. We had never heard of them before Jeron’s zooming fingers found them, and we had certainly never heard of anyone traveling there before. The appeal for us was largely the remoteness of the islands, second only to the beauty. Once we discovered the islands, the research began. The more we researched, the more we fell in love. We decided to stay on Little Corn Island as opposed to Big Corn Island, simply because we had never seen anything more beautiful. Just as the name suggests, Little Corn is the smaller of the two islands and is definitely more remote, which was a huge attraction for us. We also liked the fact that the small island, only about 1 square mile, was completely auto free. The only way around the island is by foot or bicycle. That and the aforementioned beauty really sealed the deal for us. We truly found our island paradise.

What We Loved

Simply put: beauty. We loved the beauty of the islands. The blue caribbean water, the palm trees, the cobblestone road on Big Corn; it was all such a wonder to take in. We have said it before and can almost guarantee we will say it again, but the pictures of Little Corn that we fell in love with when researching the island absolutely did not do it justice! In fact, to this day when people see our pictures they assume they are fake. How can a place be THAT beautiful? Well we assure you, it really is that beautiful. We were greeted on Little Corn by staff members of our resort who accompanied us to the boat to shuttle us to the other side of the island where we were staying. Once we arrived, we were greeted by even more staff to take us to our bungalow. Now, I have to admit that this part of the arrival made us quite uncomfortable. Yes, we were staying at a 5-Star resort, and yes it’s their job; but we can’t tell you the amount of times that we tried to take our backpacks from the two staff members and carry them ourselves! Who are we to have the petite concierge carry our bags to our room? Eventually we relented and all of the awkwardness was immediately forgotten once we arrived at our room. Wow, just wow. Again, pictures do not do it justice one bit. We will get into the room, accommodations and amazing staff of Yemaya below, but for now we will just focus on the scenery and the view from our bungalow. You know those stock screen-savers on every computer that people use so that they can stare at it while they’re at their boring job and day-dream of being in paradise? That. That’s what our view was. Palm trees. Hammocks. The blue-green Caribbean Sea. The sailboat anchored nearby that is used to take guests snorkeling and fishing. It was all a dream. And it was our dream come true.
Another thing we loved was the seclusion and the peace of the islands. Any time you stay on an island, no matter how big or small, there is always a sense of seclusion; but this was different. These islands just have a different feel to them and it is hard not to feel like you have stumbled on something special and want to keep it to yourself so it stays somewhat undiscovered and pure. But that is not what we or this website are about, so we will share our island experiences with everyone in hopes that the islands thrive.
Beauty, seclusion, peace. When we are asked why we fell in love with The Corn Islands so much after just 2 weeks, this is the answer we give and honestly, do we need to say more?

The currency in Nicaragua is the Cordoba (C)

We were able to pre-order our money through our bank, it was ready in about 10 days. Since the island is so small, it made it much easier to have the money on us when we arrived. US dollars are accepted on the island, but we find that using local currency as much as we can cuts down on the exchange rate confusion. There is also only one ATM on Little Corn but there is no guarantee it will be in service, and only a few places accept credit cards, so you will need to have cash with you before you arrive.

Bugs!!

These are tropical islands in the Caribbean, so of course there are bugs. Another of the many upsides of staying at a boutique resort was that they sprayed for bugs several times a day, so we were not bothered by bugs while relaxing at the resort. However, when we left the resort, especially on our walk through the jungle to the other side of the island, we did encounter bugs. Our advice is to take the same precautions with bugs as you do in any other tropical destination. Again, we recommend Sawyer Bug Repellant and Benadryl, just in case.

Transportation

On Big Corn, you have a few more travel options than on Little Corn, where no automobiles are allowed. You can either rent motorbikes, or you can get a cab, For C$20 per person, you can take a cab anywhere on the island, anytime. You can also do cab sharing for C$20 per person. The buses are also C$10.

Try to Give Back

As always, we try to give back to the community in some way when we travel. On this particular trip, we decided to take school supplies to the school on Little Corn. Granted, packing a dozen notebooks, pencils and stickers in each of our packs was not the most pleasant thing while we were traveling there, the smiles we received when we dropped them off at The Little Corn Island School made it well worth it.
