This is the trip where we discovered and fell in love with utilizing the local public transportation. Cabs waiting outside the hotel were charging $20 for a ride into Zihuatanejo. A short walk outside of the resort and down the road a bit to the bus stop, dropped the cost of the ride down to under $0.75 per person each way. The bus ride from Zihuatanejo to Playa La Ropa is under $0.50. The only inconvenience (if you would even call it that) is the frequent stops along the way. We do not mind the stops because it gives us the chance to really check out the area and get to know the people. The stops are all throughout the town, and the buses run continuously from Zihuatanejo to Ixtapa and neighboring areas, so if you miss one bus you can easily catch another. Keep in mind, these buses are not the buses you may be used to – think more “retired school bus”. If you don’t mind a little bit of a rough ride, this is the ideal way to get from point A to point B. If you aren’t into taking the bus, we still suggest leaving the resort and walking a bit down the road before hailing a cab. They tend to charge more when they pick you up at the resort. In our opinion, the best modes of transportation in this region are bus or cab. While we love renting our own outfits, whether it is a scooter or an automobile, the traffic is quite gnarly so we would recommend having someone else do the driving, unless you feel 100% comfortable.
